Steps to Distance Calculator
Convert your step count to distance walked or run based on your stride length.
Supports miles, kilometers, feet, and meters.
A step counter gives you raw step counts, but the numbers that actually matter for health are distance walked and calories burned. Converting steps to those metrics requires two personal inputs: your stride length and your body weight.
Formula — Steps to Distance: Distance = Steps × Stride Length
Formula — Calories Burned Walking: Calories = Body Weight (kg) × Distance (km) × 0.57 (approximate MET-based formula for moderate walking)
Or using steps directly: Calories ≈ Steps × 0.04 (rough estimate for a 70 kg / 155 lb person at moderate pace)
What each variable means:
- Stride Length — one stride = two steps (left + right). Average values: women ~2.1 ft (64 cm), men ~2.5 ft (76 cm). Measure yours by walking 10 steps and dividing the distance by 10.
- Body Weight — heavier people burn more calories per step because more energy is needed to move more mass.
- MET (Metabolic Equivalent of Task) — walking at 3 mph has a MET of ~3.5. MET × body weight (kg) × hours = calories.
Worked example: Person: 75 kg, stride length 75 cm (0.75 m), walks 10,000 steps.
Distance = 10,000 × 0.75 m = 7,500 m = 7.5 km (4.66 miles) Calories = 75 × 7.5 × 0.57 = 321 calories
Reference values:
- 2,000 steps ≈ 1 mile for most people
- 10,000 steps ≈ 4–5 miles
- Walking burns roughly 80–100 calories per mile for a 155 lb person
- 10,000 steps/day is a widely cited health goal, but even 7,000–8,000 steps shows strong health benefits
How we build and check this calculator
This calculator runs entirely in your browser, so the numbers you enter stay on your device. The math behind it is written by hand and tested against worked examples and standard references before the page goes live.
