Calories Burned
Calories burned during yoga are estimated using MET (Metabolic Equivalent of Task) values, which vary by yoga style.
Formula:
Calories Burned = MET × Weight (kg) × Duration (hours)
MET values by yoga style:
| Yoga Style | MET | Calories/hr (150 lb person) |
|---|---|---|
| Hatha (gentle) | 2.5 | 170 |
| Vinyasa (flow) | 4.0 | 272 |
| Ashtanga | 5.0 | 340 |
| Power yoga | 5.5 | 374 |
| Bikram / Hot yoga | 5.0 | 340 |
| Yin / Restorative | 2.0 | 136 |
For comparison:
- Walking (3.5 mph): 4.3 MET (~293 cal/hr)
- Light cycling: 6.0 MET (~408 cal/hr)
- Stretching: 2.3 MET (~157 cal/hr)
Note: Hot yoga may feel more intense due to sweating, but studies show calorie burn is similar to non-heated versions of the same style.
