Stuffed Animal Fabric Calculator

Calculate how much fabric you need for a stuffed animal.
Enter pattern piece dimensions, seam allowance, and fabric width to get total yardage.

Fabric Estimate

Sewing a stuffed animal requires more fabric than you might expect. The gaps between pattern pieces, the seam allowances on every edge, and the inevitable cutting mistakes all add up.

The basic formula per piece:

fabric_per_piece = (width + 2 x SA) x (height + 2 x SA)

Where SA is your seam allowance (typically 6 mm or 1/4 inch for plush, 10 mm for minky or fleece).

Total fabric area:

total_area_cm2 = pieces x fabric_per_piece x 1.10

The 1.10 multiplier is a 10% waste factor for layout inefficiency. Curved pieces especially don’t tile perfectly on fabric. For complex shapes or napped fabrics (fur, velvet) that require directional cutting, use 1.20 instead.

Converting to linear yards or meters:

Once you have total area, divide by usable fabric width. Common fabric widths:

  • 44 inches (112 cm): quilting cotton, felt, most craft fabric
  • 60 inches (152 cm): minky, fleece, anti-pill

linear_cm = total_area_cm2 / usable_width_cm

Always round up to the nearest 10 cm (or quarter yard) when buying. Fabric stores don’t cut 83 cm; they’ll cut 90 or 100.

Tip for multi-color designs: Calculate separately for each color using only the pieces cut from that fabric. This calculator handles the total area for a single fabric.
