Toy Production Cost Calculator
Calculate the total cost and retail price for a handmade toy.
Enter material cost, labor time, hourly rate, and overhead to get cost breakdown and suggested pricing.
Most craft sellers underprice their toys because they only count materials. Labor is real money. Overhead is real money. And profit is what keeps a business alive.
Total cost formula:
total_cost = materials + labor + overhead
Where:
- materials = cost of all fabric, stuffing, paint, hardware, packaging
- labor = (time_minutes / 60) x hourly_rate
- overhead = typically 15-25% of (materials + labor) — covers tools, electricity, space, shipping supplies
Pricing markup:
selling_price = total_cost x markup
Common markups:
- 2x: minimum viable (covers costs, thin margin)
- 2.5x: standard craft fair pricing
- 3x: recommended for online selling (covers platform fees, returns, slower velocity)
A note on hourly rate: Many crafters pay themselves less than minimum wage. That is a choice, but it is a cost. If you want to grow, price as if your time costs at least local minimum wage. For skilled toy making, $20-40/hr is reasonable.
Where handmade toys succeed on pricing: Uniqueness and story. A one-of-a-kind waldorf doll with hand-embroidered features justifies $80-150 where a mass-produced equivalent costs $15. Lean into that, not on undercutting.
