Toy Paint Coverage Calculator

Calculate how much paint you need for a wooden or foam toy.

Toy paint calculations start with surface area, then account for paint coverage rate and number of coats.

Surface area by shape:

  • Rectangular block: SA = 2(LW + LH + WH)
  • Cylinder: SA = 2 x pi x r x (r + H)
  • Sphere: SA = 4 x pi x r squared

For assembled toys with multiple parts, calculate each piece and add them up. Subtract area at glued joints where paint does not go.

Paint volume formula:

paint_mL = (surface_area_cm2 x coats) / coverage_rate_cm2_per_mL

Coverage rates by paint type:

  • Acrylic craft paint (Apple Barrel, DecoArt): 50-70 cm2/mL
  • Artist acrylic (higher pigment): 40-55 cm2/mL
  • Latex house paint: 80-100 cm2/mL

Porous surfaces like raw wood absorb more on the first coat. A sanding sealer or gesso primer reduces absorption and can cut total paint use by 30-40%.

Child-safe paints:

For toys intended for children, use paints certified for toy safety:

  • US: CPSC regulations and ASTM D-4236
  • EU: EN 71-3 chemical migration limits

Look for “non-toxic” or AP certified (Arts and Creative Materials Institute) labeling. Never use solvent-based or lead-containing paints on toys.
