International calling cost depends on your carrier’s per-minute rate to the destination country, any applicable connection fees, and whether you’re using a mobile phone, VoIP, or calling card. Rates vary enormously by provider and destination.

Basic cost formula: Call Cost = (Duration in Minutes × Per-Minute Rate) + Connection Fee

Monthly cost projection: Monthly Cost = Total Minutes Called × Average Per-Minute Rate

VoIP comparison formula: VoIP Annual Cost = Monthly Plan Fee × 12 Break-even minutes = (VoIP Annual Cost − Traditional Annual Cost) ÷ Per-Minute Savings

Where:

• Duration — billed in whole minutes by most carriers (partial minutes round up); some VoIP providers bill per second
• Per-minute rate — varies by destination country; ranges from $0.02/min (Canada from US) to $3.00+/min (remote island nations)
• Connection fee — a flat charge per call placed, typically $0.25–$1.00; adds up for short frequent calls
• VoIP — Voice over Internet Protocol (WhatsApp, Skype, Zoom, Google Voice); calls to other app users are typically free; calls to landlines/non-users are charged at much lower rates than traditional carriers

Worked example: You call family in India for 45 minutes, 3 times per week. Carrier rate: $0.18/min, $0.50 connection fee per call.

• Cost per call = (45 × $0.18) + $0.50 = $8.10 + $0.50 = $8.60
• Weekly cost = $8.60 × 3 = $25.80
• Monthly cost = $25.80 × 4.33 = $111.71
• Annual cost = $1,340

Alternative: Google Voice charges ~$0.02/min to India with no connection fee.
