Bird Seed Amount Calculator

Calculate how much bird seed you need based on feeder type, number of feeders, and bird species visiting your yard.
Includes mix ratios.

Select your feeder types and season to estimate how much bird seed you need per month.

Understanding Bird Seed Quantities

The amount of bird seed you need depends on the type and number of feeders you have, how many birds visit your yard, and the season. Winter months require significantly more seed because natural food sources are scarce and birds need extra calories to stay warm. A busy backyard feeding station can go through 5 to 10 pounds (2.3 to 4.5 kg) of seed per week during peak winter months.

Seed Consumption by Feeder Type:

Feeder Type Capacity Refill Frequency Weekly Use
Tube feeder (small) 1 - 2 lb (0.5 - 0.9 kg) Every 2-3 days 3 - 5 lb (1.4 - 2.3 kg)
Tube feeder (large) 3 - 5 lb (1.4 - 2.3 kg) Every 4-7 days 3 - 5 lb (1.4 - 2.3 kg)
Hopper feeder 5 - 8 lb (2.3 - 3.6 kg) Every 5-10 days 5 - 8 lb (2.3 - 3.6 kg)
Platform feeder 2 - 4 lb (0.9 - 1.8 kg) Every 1-2 days 7 - 14 lb (3.2 - 6.4 kg)
Suet cage 0.7 lb (0.3 kg) Every 3-5 days 1 - 2 lb (0.5 - 0.9 kg)
Nyjer/thistle feeder 1 - 2 lb (0.5 - 0.9 kg) Every 5-10 days 1 - 2 lb (0.5 - 0.9 kg)

Seasonal Adjustment:

Bird feeding rates change dramatically with the seasons. During spring and summer, birds have abundant natural food sources and feeder use drops by 30 to 50 percent. During fall, birds begin visiting feeders more as they prepare for winter or migration. Peak consumption occurs in winter, especially during cold snaps, ice storms, and heavy snowfall.

  • Spring: 50 to 70 percent of winter use
  • Summer: 40 to 60 percent of winter use
  • Fall: 70 to 90 percent of winter use
  • Winter: 100 percent (base rate)

Popular Seed Mixes:

Black oil sunflower seed is the single most popular and versatile bird seed. It attracts the widest variety of species. A good general-purpose mix contains 50 percent black oil sunflower, 25 percent white millet, 15 percent safflower, and 10 percent peanut pieces. For finch feeders, use 100 percent nyjer (thistle) seed.

Monthly Supply Estimate:

For planning purposes, multiply your weekly seed consumption by 4.3 to get the monthly amount. Most bird seed stays fresh for 2 to 3 months when stored in a cool, dry container. Buying in bulk (25 or 50 pound bags) is significantly cheaper per pound than small bags. A household with two to three feeders should expect to use 20 to 40 pounds (9 to 18 kg) of seed per month during winter in a moderately active bird area.

Storage Tips:

Keep seed in airtight metal or heavy plastic containers to prevent moisture, mold, and rodent access. A metal garbage can with a tight lid works well. Never use wet or moldy seed, as it can spread disease among birds.
