Volume measures how much space something takes up. This converter uses the liter as its base and bridges the metric units with the US customary cups, pints, quarts, and gallons.

Key relationships:

  • 1 L = 1,000 mL
  • 1 m³ = 1,000 L
  • 1 US fl oz = 29.5735 mL
  • 1 US cup = 236.588 mL
  • 1 US pint = 473.176 mL
  • 1 US gallon = 3,785.41 mL

For a sense of scale:

  • A can of soda: 355 mL (12 fl oz)
  • A standard wine bottle: 750 mL
  • A bathtub: about 300 L

This converter uses US customary units, and that detail matters more than people expect. The US and Imperial (UK) systems share unit names but not sizes. A US gallon is 3.785 L; an Imperial gallon is 4.546 L, about 20 percent bigger, and the pints differ too. So a recipe or fuel figure that just says “gallon” or “pint” means a noticeably different amount depending on which side of the Atlantic wrote it.

The other classic snag is the fluid ounce versus the weight ounce. A fluid ounce measures volume; an ounce measures mass. They match up only for water, so for anything denser or lighter, treating them as interchangeable throws a recipe off.
