North American sizes:
| Size | mm | inches |
|---|---|---|
| Letter | 215.9 × 279.4 | 8.5 × 11 |
| Legal | 215.9 × 355.6 | 8.5 × 14 |
| Tabloid | 279.4 × 431.8 | 11 × 17 |
Each A-series size is half the previous size. A4 is the most common size worldwide.
The A-series is one of the most elegant standards ever designed. Each size is exactly half the one before, and because they all share the 1:√2 ratio, cutting a sheet in half keeps the proportions identical. That’s why you can scale an A3 document down to A4 with no cropping or distortion, and why A0 was defined to be precisely one square meter, which makes reasoning about paper weight in GSM easy.
North American Letter and Legal sizes come from a different tradition and don’t share that property, so scaling between them is messier. The practical headache is that A4 (210 by 297 mm) and US Letter (216 by 279 mm) are close but not equal: A4 is narrower and taller. A document laid out for one can shift its margins or clip content when printed on the other, which is the usual culprit when a file prints fine at home but comes out wrong at an overseas office.
