Pasta roughly doubles in weight when cooked.

Dry to cooked weight ratio:

  • Most pasta: 1 g dry = 2 g cooked (approximate)
  • Egg noodles: 1 g dry = 1.8 g cooked

Standard servings:

  • 1 serving dry pasta = 56 g (2 oz) = 112 g cooked
  • 1 pound (454 g) dry = about 8 servings

Common dry amounts:

  • 100 g dry = 200 g cooked = 3.5 oz dry
  • 250 g dry = 500 g cooked = 8.8 oz dry
  • 500 g dry = 1,000 g cooked = 1.1 lbs dry

Tips:

  • Weigh pasta dry for best accuracy.
  • Cooked weight varies with cook time (al dente vs soft).

Pasta is the food people most reliably over-portion, because dry pasta looks like so little. It roughly doubles in weight as it absorbs water, so a modest 2-ounce dry serving becomes a full plate once cooked. Eyeballing straight from the box almost always overshoots, which is how a “quick dinner for two” turns into leftovers for days.

Weighing is the only consistent way to portion it, because volume measures lie for pasta. A cup of penne and a cup of macaroni hold very different amounts, since the shapes pack differently, and long pasta won’t sit in a cup at all. That’s why the old tricks exist: a bundle of dry spaghetti about the diameter of a US quarter is roughly one serving. Handy in a pinch, but a kitchen scale set to 2 ounces for a side or 4 for a main is far more reliable than any guess.
