Fuel Tank Range Calculator
Calculate how far you can drive on a full tank.
Enter your tank size and fuel efficiency to find your maximum driving range.
Fuel tank range tells you the maximum distance your vehicle can travel on a full tank, and the cost to fill up from any fuel level.
Core formulas: Maximum Range = Tank Capacity (gallons) × Fuel Efficiency (MPG) Current Range = Current Fuel (gallons) × Fuel Efficiency (MPG) Fill-Up Cost = Gallons Needed × Fuel Price per Gallon Gallons Needed = Tank Capacity − Current Fuel Level Cost per Mile = Fuel Price per Gallon ÷ MPG
Metric conversions: Range (km) = Tank Capacity (liters) × Fuel Efficiency (km/L) L/100km to MPG conversion: MPG = 235.2 ÷ (L/100km)
Typical fuel tank sizes by vehicle class:
| Vehicle Type | Tank Size (gallons) | Typical MPG | Range |
|---|---|---|---|
| Subcompact car | 10–12 gal | 35–40 MPG | 350–480 miles |
| Midsize sedan | 14–16 gal | 28–35 MPG | 390–560 miles |
| Full-size SUV | 22–26 gal | 18–24 MPG | 396–624 miles |
| Pickup truck | 24–36 gal | 16–22 MPG | 384–792 miles |
| Hybrid sedan | 11–13 gal | 50–60 MPG | 550–780 miles |
Worked example: Your 2022 Honda CR-V has a 14.8-gallon tank. Fuel economy: 30 MPG city/38 MPG highway. Current tank is 25% full. Gas price: $3.45/gallon.
Current fuel = 14.8 × 0.25 = 3.7 gallons Current range (highway) = 3.7 × 38 = 140.6 miles Gallons to fill up = 14.8 − 3.7 = 11.1 gallons Fill-up cost = 11.1 × $3.45 = $38.30 Full tank range (highway) = 14.8 × 38 = 562.4 miles Cost per mile (highway) = $3.45 ÷ 38 = $0.091/mile (~9.1 cents/mile)
