Speedometer km/h to mph Converter

Quickly convert between kilometers per hour and miles per hour.
Includes common speed references for driving in different countries.

Speed Conversion

The kilometer to mile conversion is one of the most common unit conversions for travelers, international drivers, and anyone working with imported vehicles. The relationship is defined by an exact international standard set in 1959.

Formula: Miles = Kilometers × 0.621371 Kilometers = Miles × 1.60934

The precise conversion factor: 1 international mile = exactly 1.609344 kilometers (defined exactly, not approximate). Therefore: 1 km = 1 ÷ 1.609344 = 0.621371 miles

Quick mental approximations:

  • Multiply km by 0.6 for a rough mile estimate (accurate to within 3.3%)
  • Or: divide km by 1.6 (slightly easier mentally)
  • For a faster trick: divide by 8, then multiply by 5 (exact same ratio as 5/8 = 0.625)

Fuel economy context (why this matters for drivers):

  • US fuel economy is measured in MPG (miles per gallon)
  • UK fuel economy is measured in MPG (Imperial gallon — which is 20% larger than the US gallon)
  • European fuel economy is measured in L/100km (liters per 100 kilometers)
  • Converting US MPG to L/100km: divide 235.21 by the MPG value

Worked examples:

  • Highway speed limit: 100 km/h = 100 × 0.6214 = 62.1 mph
  • Marathon distance: 42.195 km = 42.195 × 0.6214 = 26.22 miles
  • Car odometer: 150,000 km = 150,000 × 0.6214 = 93,206 miles
  • Fuel economy: 38 MPG (US) → 235.21 ÷ 38 = 6.19 L/100km

Countries using km vs. miles:

  • Miles: USA, Liberia, Myanmar (road signs); UK uses miles for road distances but km in many scientific contexts.
  • Kilometers: virtually every other country on Earth.

Speedometer note: Most modern cars sold globally have dual speedometers showing both km/h and mph. If you’re driving a US-spec car in Canada or Mexico, the posted speed limits are in km/h — always confirm which unit the speedometer is displaying.
