Memory Wire Loops Needed

Memory Wire Bracelet Loops

Memory wire is pre-coiled spring steel that holds its shape — perfect for adjustable coil bracelets that fit any wrist without a clasp.

The math: Wire length per loop = π × Memory wire diameter

Standard memory wire diameters:

Type Diameter Loop Circumference
Bracelet (small) 2 inches (5 cm) ~6.3 inches
Bracelet (medium) 2.25 in (5.7 cm) ~7.1 inches
Bracelet (large) 2.5 in (6.4 cm) ~7.85 inches
Anklet 3 inches (7.6 cm) ~9.4 inches
Necklace (small) 4 in (10 cm) ~12.6 inches
Necklace (large) 6 in (15 cm) ~18.9 inches

Bead count per loop: Beads per loop = Loop circumference / Bead diameter

For 6mm beads on a 2.25-inch bracelet wire (7.1" / 18 cm circumference): 18 / 0.6 cm = 30 beads per loop

Wrist sizing:

Wrist Size Recommended Wire Loops
Small (5.5-6 in) 2-inch diameter 3-5
Medium (6-7 in) 2.25-inch diameter 3-5
Large (7-8 in) 2.5-inch diameter 3-5
Extra-large (8+ in) 2.5-inch + extra coil 4-6

Loop count style guide:

Loops Visual Effect
1-2 Minimal — almost like a regular bracelet
3-4 Classic memory wire look (most popular)
5-6 Substantial coil, statement piece
7+ Cuff-like effect, formal/decorative

End loops (essential): Memory wire ends MUST have loops or end caps to prevent beads sliding off and to avoid sharp wire ends.

Two methods:

  1. Memory wire round-nose pliers (best): roll wire end into a small loop, no soldering
  2. End caps with glue (E6000 or two-part epoxy): glue a 6mm end cap onto the cut wire

Cutting memory wire:

  • NEVER cut with regular wire cutters, too hard, damages cutters
  • Use memory wire cutters ($15-25) with hardened blades
  • Or carefully cut with grinding wheel / Dremel
  • Always wear safety glasses: wire ends fly when cut

Bead size to circumference ratio:

Bead Size Beads per 7.1" loop (medium bracelet)
4 mm 45
6 mm 30
8 mm 22
10 mm 18
12 mm 15
14 mm 13

Mixed bead patterns: For mixed sizes, calculate average bead diameter: Avg = (D1 × Q1 + D2 × Q2 + …) / (Q1 + Q2 + …)

For a mix of half 6mm + half 4mm beads: (6 + 4) / 2 = 5 mm average

Spacer beads (small accent beads): Add 1-2 spacer beads between feature beads — spacers are 2-3mm and add interest without major width.

Wire reuse: Memory wire keeps its memory only if uncut on the original spool. Once cut, it’s permanently shaped at that length. Reusing requires re-coiling around a wood dowel, which usually weakens the spring.
