Porch Roof Materials Calculator

Calculate roofing materials for a porch: shingles, underlayment, drip edge, fascia, and rafters from porch dimensions and pitch.

Porch Roof Materials Calculation

Building a porch roof requires estimating multiple materials: shingles, underlayment, drip edge, fascia board, and rafters. Each depends on the roof area, which is determined by the porch dimensions and roof pitch (slope).

Step 1: Calculate Roof Area

Roof Area = Porch Width × Rafter Length

Where:

  • Rafter Length = Porch Depth / cos(Pitch Angle)
  • Or using rise/run: Rafter Length = Porch Depth × √(1 + (Rise/12)²)

The pitch is expressed as rise over 12 inches of run. A 4/12 pitch means the roof rises 4 inches for every 12 inches of horizontal run.

Pitch Multiplier Table

Pitch Rise/Run Angle Multiplier Rafter per 10 ft run
2/12 2:12 9.5° 1.014 10 ft 2 in
3/12 3:12 14.0° 1.031 10 ft 4 in
4/12 4:12 18.4° 1.054 10 ft 7 in
5/12 5:12 22.6° 1.083 10 ft 10 in
6/12 6:12 26.6° 1.118 11 ft 2 in
7/12 7:12 30.3° 1.158 11 ft 7 in
8/12 8:12 33.7° 1.202 12 ft 0 in

Step 2: Shingles

Shingles are sold in bundles. Three bundles typically cover one square (100 sq ft).

Bundles needed = (Roof Area / 100) × 3

Add 10–15% for waste (cuts, starter strip, ridge cap).

Step 3: Underlayment (Felt Paper or Synthetic)

Underlayment goes under the shingles as a moisture barrier.

  • 15 lb felt: 400 sq ft per roll
  • 30 lb felt: 200 sq ft per roll
  • Synthetic: 1,000 sq ft per roll

Rolls needed = Roof Area / Roll Coverage

Add 10% for overlaps.

Step 4: Drip Edge

Drip edge is installed along the eaves and rakes (sides). Standard drip edge comes in 10-foot pieces.

Drip edge pieces = (Porch Width + 2 × Rafter Length) / 10

Step 5: Fascia Board

Fascia runs along the eave (front edge of the roof). Standard fascia boards are 1×6 or 1×8, in 8, 10, 12, or 16 ft lengths.

Fascia length = Porch Width (plus any returns)

Step 6: Rafters

Rafters are typically spaced 16 inches on center (OC) or 24 inches OC.

Number of rafters = (Porch Width / Spacing) + 1

Each rafter must be long enough to span the porch depth plus the overhang (typically 12–18 inches).

Worked Example

Porch: 16 ft wide × 10 ft deep, 4/12 pitch, 12 in overhang:

  • Pitch multiplier (4/12) = 1.054
  • Rafter length = (10 + 1) × 1.054 = 11.6 ft → use 12 ft lumber
  • Roof area = 16 × 11.6 = 185.6 sq ft
  • Shingles = (185.6 / 100) × 3 × 1.15 = 6.4 → 7 bundles
  • Underlayment (synthetic) = 185.6 × 1.10 / 1000 = 1 roll
  • Drip edge = (16 + 2 × 11.6) / 10 = 3.92 → 4 pieces
  • Rafters at 16" OC = (16 × 12 / 16) + 1 = 13 rafters
  • Fascia = 16 ft → 1 piece of 16 ft or 2 pieces of 8 ft

Material Costs (US Average 2025)

Material Typical Cost
3-tab shingles $30–$35 per bundle
Architectural shingles $35–$50 per bundle
Synthetic underlayment $60–$90 per roll
30 lb felt $20–$30 per roll
Drip edge (10 ft) $5–$8 per piece
1×6 fascia (8 ft) $8–$15 per board
2×6 rafter (12 ft) $8–$14 per board
2×8 rafter (12 ft) $12–$20 per board
