Roofing Shingle Calculator
Calculate how many shingle bundles, ridge cap, and underlayment you need for your roof.
Enter dimensions and pitch for accurate material estimates.
Roofing shingle quantity calculation converts your roof’s total surface area into the number of squares and bundles of shingles needed, accounting for roof pitch and waste.
Core formulas: Roof Area = Footprint Area × Pitch Multiplier Squares Needed = Roof Area ÷ 100 (1 roofing square = 100 sq ft) Bundles Needed = Squares × 3 (standard shingles: 3 bundles per square) With Waste Factor = Bundles × 1.10 to 1.15 (10–15% for cuts and overlap)
Pitch multiplier table:
| Roof Pitch (rise:run) | Pitch Multiplier |
|---|---|
| 2:12 (low) | 1.02 |
| 3:12 | 1.03 |
| 4:12 (common) | 1.05 |
| 5:12 | 1.08 |
| 6:12 (moderate) | 1.12 |
| 8:12 | 1.20 |
| 10:12 (steep) | 1.30 |
| 12:12 (very steep) | 1.41 |
Worked example: House footprint: 40 ft × 30 ft = 1,200 sq ft (simple gable roof, two sides) Roof pitch: 6:12 → Pitch Multiplier: 1.12 Roof Area = 1,200 × 1.12 = 1,344 sq ft Squares = 1,344 ÷ 100 = 13.44 squares Bundles (3 per square) = 13.44 × 3 = 40.3 bundles With 12% waste = 40.3 × 1.12 = ~45 bundles (round up)
Shingle types and coverage:
- 3-tab shingles: 3 bundles/square, lightest, least expensive
- Architectural/dimensional: 3–4 bundles/square, most popular, 25–30-year warranty
- Premium (luxury): 4–5 bundles/square, highest wind/impact resistance
Additional materials: Add 10% more for valleys, hips, ridges, and starter strips. Always order one extra square beyond your calculation — running short mid-project means color-matching issues with a new batch.
