Interior Door Cost Calculator
Estimate the total cost of interior doors for your project.
Choose door type and hardware to get a complete budget including installation.
Interior door budgeting turns a door count into a total project cost. Enter how many doors you are buying, pick the door type and hardware level, then fill in your own prices. The calculator multiplies everything out and shows the with-install total next to the DIY total so you can see what the labor is worth.
Cost formula: Per Door = Door Price + Hardware + Hinges + Install Total = Per Door × Number of Doors
If you are still working out how many doors to budget for, the rules of thumb below help.
Rule-of-thumb door-count formulas: Interior Doors (residential) ≈ Number of Rooms + Number of Bathrooms + 1 (for each closet) Exterior Doors (residential) ≈ 1 front + 1 rear + 1 per garage bay + 1 per basement access
What each variable means:
- Exterior Doors: entry/egress doors exposed to weather. These require higher-grade materials: solid core, weatherstripping, and reinforced frames. Standard sizes: 36" × 80" (main entry), 32" × 80" (secondary).
- Interior Doors: interior passage doors. Standard hollow-core doors work for most interior applications. Standard size: 28"–32" × 80"; bathroom: 28" × 80"; bedroom: 30"–32" × 80".
- Closet Doors: bifold or bypass (sliding) doors. One opening may require 2 door panels.
- Pocket Doors: recessed into the wall. Count the wall rough opening, not door panels.
Standard residential door counts by home size:
| Home Size | Typical Exterior Doors | Typical Interior Doors | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1,000 sq ft (2BR/1BA) | 2–3 | 6–8 | 8–11 |
| 1,500 sq ft (3BR/2BA) | 3–4 | 9–12 | 12–16 |
| 2,500 sq ft (4BR/3BA) | 4–5 | 14–18 | 18–23 |
| 3,500 sq ft (5BR/4BA) | 5–6 | 18–24 | 23–30 |
Worked cost example: Say a remodel needs 8 hollow-core interior doors. You price the slabs at $80 each, basic knobs at $15, hinges at $10, and pro install at $150 per door.
Per door: $80 + $15 + $10 + $150 = $255 Total with install: $255 × 8 = $2,040 DIY, no install labor: ($80 + $15 + $10) × 8 = $840
So doing the hanging yourself saves about $1,200 on this job. The prices are yours to enter, since they swing a lot: hollow-core interior doors run roughly $60–$200 each, solid-core $150–$500, and exterior entry doors anywhere from $300 into the thousands depending on material and glass.
