Converted Score

ACT to SAT score conversion uses concordance tables developed jointly by College Board and ACT. These tables are derived from students who took both tests, providing statistically valid equivalence — not a mathematical formula with a single conversion factor.

Official concordance (selected scores):

ACT Composite SAT Total (1600 scale)
36 1590
35 1540
34 1500
33 1460
32 1420
31 1380
30 1360
29 1320
28 1290
27 1250
26 1210
25 1180
24 1150
23 1110
22 1080
20 1020
18 950
16 880

Approximation formula (for quick estimates when the table is unavailable):

SAT ≈ (ACT × 40) + 150 (valid in the 20–36 range)

Example: ACT 28 → (28 × 40) + 150 = 1,270 (concordance table shows 1,290 — close enough for planning)

Worked example: ACT composite score: 26 Concordance table equivalent: 1,210 SAT Approximate formula: (26 × 40) + 150 = 1,190 (within acceptable margin)

When to use the conversion:

  • Checking if your ACT score meets a school’s SAT minimum requirement
  • Comparing offers from test prep programs that quote one scale
  • Choosing which test to take based on target score benchmarks

Important caveat: Individual scores vary — a student who scores 1,300 SAT may score a 28 or a 30 on the ACT depending on strengths. Concordance is a population average, not a guarantee.
