Grade Calculator
Calculate your weighted average grade.
Enter scores and their weights to get your overall grade with letter grade conversion.
Final course grade calculation determines your overall grade in a class where different assessments (exams, homework, projects, participation) carry different weights. This is a weighted average — not a simple average — because each category contributes a specified percentage of the total grade.
Weighted average formula: Final Grade = Σ (Category Weight × Category Score) ÷ Σ Weights
When weights sum to 100%: Final Grade = (W₁ × S₁) + (W₂ × S₂) + (W₃ × S₃) + …
Where:
- Wᵢ — the weight of each category (expressed as a decimal: 30% = 0.30)
- Sᵢ — your score in that category (as a percentage)
- All weights must sum to 1.0 (100%)
Letter grade scale (standard US):
- A / A+: 93–100% / 97–100%
- A−: 90–92%
- B+: 87–89% | B: 83–86% | B−: 80–82%
- C+: 77–79% | C: 73–76% | C−: 70–72%
- D+: 67–69% | D: 63–66% | D−: 60–62%
- F: below 60%
GPA conversion (4.0 scale):
- A = 4.0 | A− = 3.7
- B+ = 3.3 | B = 3.0 | B− = 2.7
- C+ = 2.3 | C = 2.0 | C− = 1.7
- D+ = 1.3 | D = 1.0 | F = 0.0
What score do I need on the final exam? Required Score = (Target Grade − (Current Weighted Total × (1 − Final Exam Weight))) ÷ Final Exam Weight
Worked example: Course weights: Homework 20%, Midterm 30%, Final 40%, Participation 10%.
Your scores: Homework 88%, Midterm 74%, Participation 95%. You need 80% (B) overall.
- Current weighted total (without final): (0.20 × 88) + (0.30 × 74) + (0.10 × 95) = 17.6 + 22.2 + 9.5 = 49.3 points out of 60%
- Required final exam score: (80 − 49.3) ÷ 0.40 = 30.7 ÷ 0.40 = 76.75%
You need at least 77% on the final to earn a B in the course.
