Library Fine
Library Fine Formula
Fine = MIN(Days Overdue x Daily Rate, Maximum Cap)
Typical US library fine rates (2024):
- Adult books: $0.10–$0.50 per day
- Children books: $0.05–$0.25 per day
- DVDs/media: $1.00–$2.00 per day
- Interlibrary loans: $0.50–$1.00 per day
Maximum caps are usually $5–$25 per item (or full replacement cost). Many libraries have eliminated fines for children and teens entirely. Lost or damaged books are typically billed at replacement cost ($25–$35 average).
