Formulas:
Monthly Usage = Per-Person Rate × Number of People
Daily Usage = Monthly Usage / 30
Days Until Empty = Current Amount on Hand / Daily Usage
What each variable means:
- Household Size: the number of people eating at home regularly. More people means faster consumption.
- Current Amount on Hand: how much of each staple you currently have (in pounds, liters, or count).
- Per-Person Monthly Rate: the average consumption per person per month, based on typical household data.

These are middling figures for a household that cooks most nights. A family that eats out four times a week will blow straight through them, and one that bakes will go through flour two or three times faster than the table suggests. Use them as a starting point and adjust once you have watched a real month go by.
Practical example: A household of 4 has 10 lbs of rice on hand. Monthly usage is 2.5 × 4 = 10 lbs. Days until empty = (10 / 10) × 30 = 30 days, so there is a restock due in about a month.
When to use it: before a grocery run, to see which staple is closest to the bottom of the jar rather than buying another bag of the thing you happened to notice. It also works for a monthly meal-planning pass.
Tips: anything under 7 days of supply gets flagged. Keep one to two weeks of buffer on staples. Bulk buying is cheaper per unit, but only for things you finish before they turn, and cooking oil in particular goes rancid within six months to a year of opening no matter how big the bottle was. Rotate older stock to the front, first in and first out.
