Outdoor weddings, graveside services, garden parties and school sports days all run into the same question the week before: it might rain, so how many umbrellas do we actually need?
The answer is not guests divided by two. It depends on how big the canopies are and on whether people will be standing still or moving.
How many people fit under one canopy
An adult occupies about 0.60 m (23.6 in) of width, shoulder to shoulder with room to move. Only about 75% of a canopy radius is genuinely dry, because the rim sheds water and the umbrella tilts into the wind. So a canopy of diameter D shelters a group of width D × 0.75.
People under an umbrella pack as circles in a circle, not as a row. The ratios are fixed:

Run that backwards from a canopy size and you get capacity. A 68-inch golf umbrella has 51 inches of dry width, which is 1.30 m, which is 2.16 people-widths. Three people, standing still.
Standing and walking are different problems
Everything above assumes people are stationary. A group walking together cannot hold formation, the umbrella has to ride higher to clear everyone, and someone always drifts to the outside and gets soaked. For anyone in motion, drop the capacity by one.
That single adjustment is why processional moments (arrivals, the walk to the cars) eat far more umbrellas than the ceremony itself, and it is the part event checklists usually miss.
Buy spares, and buy them big
Umbrellas walk off. Guests take them to the car and forget, a few invert in the first real gust, and a handful never come back from the parking attendant. Ten percent over the calculated figure is a reasonable working margin.
One last thing worth knowing: large canopies are usually cheaper per person covered, right up until they become unmanageable in wind. Price a 68-inch golf umbrella against three compacts before you decide, since a canopy that shelters three guests replaces three purchases. Above about 72 inches the wind loading gets genuinely difficult for one person to hold, and vented double-canopy models are worth the extra there.
