Umbrella Coverage Calculator
Find the right umbrella size based on how many people you need to cover.
Get recommended umbrella diameter for proper rain protection.
This calculator recommends the correct umbrella canopy diameter based on your coverage needs — whether protecting one person, a couple, or a family — using circular canopy geometry and body width estimates.
The core formula uses the canopy coverage area:
Coverage Area = π × (Canopy Radius)²
Since the canopy is a circle, the usable dry zone radius is slightly less than the canopy radius due to rain angle and wind. The effective coverage formula is:
Effective Radius = Canopy Radius × 0.75 (accounts for wind, tilt, and rain angle)
Person Coverage Estimate:
- 1 adult standing comfortably: ~0.50 m² (5.4 sq ft)
- Shoulder-to-shoulder coverage needed: ~0.60 m wide per person
Worked Example — Couple sharing an umbrella:
- Coverage needed: 2 persons × 0.60 m = 1.20 m wide
- Required effective diameter: 1.20 m
- Required canopy diameter = 1.20 ÷ 0.75 = 1.60 m → 63 inches
This matches a standard golf umbrella (60–68 inches). A standard compact umbrella (38–42 inches) covers only 1 average adult comfortably in light rain. A bubble umbrella (46–50 inches) suits 1 person in moderate wind.
Reference Sizes:
- Compact (travel): 38–42 in — 1 person, light rain
- Standard: 43–48 in — 1 person, moderate rain
- Golf: 60–68 in — 2 people, heavy rain
- Oversized/beach: 72+ in — 3–4 people
Wind rating also matters — look for umbrellas rated to 30–40 mph for storm conditions.
