Suit / Jacket Size

Suit sizing is based primarily on the chest measurement, which determines the jacket size. Additional measurements — waist, hips, height — determine the “cut” designation: Regular, Short, Long, or Extra Long. Getting the chest measurement right is the single most important step, because jackets can be altered at the waist and sleeve, but the chest and shoulders cannot be changed significantly.

How to measure for a suit:

  1. Chest: Wrap the tape measure around the fullest part of your chest, under your armpits and across your shoulder blades. Keep the tape horizontal and snug but not compressing. This is your chest measurement.

  2. Waist: Measure around your natural waist (usually 1 inch above your belly button) — this helps determine drop and alterations needed.

  3. Height: Determines jacket length designation (Short, Regular, Long, Extra Long).

Chest measurement to suit size (US/UK):

US/UK Size = Chest inches (rounded to nearest even number)

Metric conversion:

US/UK Size ≈ Chest (cm) ÷ 2.54, rounded to nearest even

European / Italian size:

EU Size = US/UK Size + 10

Comprehensive size chart:

Chest (in) Chest (cm) US / UK EU Height for Regular

38 97 38 48 5'8"–5'11" (173–180 cm)
40 102 40 50 5'9"–6'0" (175–183 cm)

Height and jacket length designations:

Label US Height EU Height
Short (S) 5'4"–5'7" (163–170 cm) Height 164–170 cm
Regular (R) 5'7"–6'0" (170–183 cm) Height 171–182 cm
Long (L) 6'0"–6'3" (183–190 cm) Height 183–191 cm
Extra Long (XL) 6'3"+ (190+ cm) Height 192+ cm

Drop — chest minus waist:

Drop Fit Style Description
6" drop Classic fit Most common; generous chest-to-waist ratio
7" drop Modern / Slim fit Slightly more tapered waist
8"+ drop Slim / Athletic fit Pronounced taper; athletic builds

Worked example: Man’s chest measurement: 42 inches, height: 5'11", waist: 36 inches

  • US Jacket size: 42 Regular
  • EU size: 52
  • Drop = 42 − 36 = 6" → Classic fit

Trouser sizing: Suit trouser waist typically runs 6 inches smaller than jacket chest in a matched suit (42R jacket comes with 36" trousers). Trousers can be ordered separately in your exact waist and inseam if the matched size doesn’t fit.
