Daily Cost Breakdown

Cost per day is a practical mental framework for evaluating whether any expense — a subscription, a gym membership, a piece of equipment, a vehicle — is worth its price. Breaking a cost down to its daily rate makes comparisons intuitive and reveals hidden value or wastefulness.

Core formula: Cost per Day = Total Cost ÷ Days of Ownership/Use

For a recurring subscription: Cost per Day = Monthly Cost ÷ 30.44 (average days per month) Or: Cost per Day = Annual Cost ÷ 365

Annualized cost per day (for multi-year purchases): Cost per Day = (Purchase Price − Resale Value) ÷ (Years Owned × 365)

What each variable means:

  • Total Cost — the full purchase price, including sales tax, delivery, installation, or activation fees
  • Days of Ownership — the expected lifespan of the product in days (or, for subscriptions, the billing period)
  • Resale Value — the estimated amount you can recover when you sell or trade in the item; reduces effective cost

Daily cost benchmarks (US, 2024):

  • Morning coffee at café: $5–$8/day
  • Netflix subscription: $0.50–$0.67/day
  • Gym membership (unused): $0.67–$1.00/day ($20–$30/month, wasted)
  • Car ownership (all costs): $15–$35/day
  • Cigarette pack/day habit: $10–$15/day → $3,650–$5,475/year
  • Home (average 30-year mortgage): $30–$80/day depending on market

Value assessment — cost per use: Cost per Use = Total Cost ÷ Number of Times Used

A $300 kitchen appliance used daily for 5 years = $300 ÷ 1,825 = $0.16 per use (excellent value). A $300 appliance used 10 times total = $30 per use (poor value).

Worked example: Laptop: $1,200. Expected use: 4 years. Resale value after 4 years: $200.

Effective cost = $1,200 − $200 = $1,000 Days = 4 × 365 = 1,460 days Cost per day = $1,000 ÷ 1,460 = $0.68/day

Used 6 hours per day for work: Cost per hour of use = $0.68 ÷ 6 = $0.11/hour — a remarkably cost-efficient tool for a professional.

Gym membership: $45/month, used 12 times per month = $3.75 per visit. Used only 3 times per month = $15.00 per visit — the same cost, but dramatically different value.
