Gold Per Hour Calculator
Calculate gold per hour farming efficiency in MMO games.
Track income rate across sessions, compare farming spots, and optimize your grinding strategy.
Gold Per Hour (GPH) is the standard efficiency metric for farming in MMORPGs and other games with in-game economies. It lets you compare different farming methods, locations, and characters to optimize your time investment.
Formulas:
GPH = Total Gold Earned ÷ Hours Farmed GPH = (Items Dropped × Item Value) ÷ Hours + Direct Gold Drops Per Hour Expected Item Value = Drop Rate × Item Sell Price Session Efficiency = GPH × Session Length
Effective GPH (accounting for repair and consumable costs): Net GPH = Gross GPH − (Repair Costs per Hour + Consumable Costs per Hour)
What each variable means:
- Items Dropped: average number of items dropped per hour at a given farm location.
- Item Value: vendor sell price, or auction house market price (use lowest current listing for conservative estimate).
- Drop Rate: probability of a specific item dropping per kill (expressed as %).
- Kills per Hour: depends on mob density, respawn rate, and your character’s DPS.
- Repair/Consumable Costs: gear durability loss and potions consumed per hour.
GPH benchmarks (varies widely by game and patch):
- Low-efficiency farming: < 500 GPH
- Average farming: 500–2,000 GPH
- High-efficiency farming: 2,000–10,000 GPH
- Elite/exploited routes: 10,000+ GPH (often patched)
Worked example: You farm for 90 minutes and collect: 350 vendor items (avg 2g each) + 3,200g direct drops − 180g repairs − 240g potions.
Gross Gold = (350 × 2) + 3,200 = 700 + 3,200 = 3,900g Net Gold = 3,900 − 180 − 240 = 3,480g in 1.5 hours Net GPH = 3,480 ÷ 1.5 = 2,320 GPH
Optimization tip: Track GPH across 5+ sessions and average the results — single sessions are highly variable due to rare drop luck.
