Includes sunscreen adjustment and vitamin D synthesis time.

Safe Exposure Time

UV Exposure and Skin Type (Fitzpatrick Scale)

The Fitzpatrick Scale classifies skin into 6 types based on burn/tan response:

Type Description Burn tendency
I Very fair, freckles, red/blonde hair Always burns
II Fair skin, blue/green eyes Burns easily
III Medium skin, brown hair Burns moderately
IV Olive/Mediterranean skin Burns minimally
V Brown skin Rarely burns
VI Dark brown/black skin Very rarely burns

Base exposure time (UV Index 6):

  • Skin Type I: ~10 minutes
  • Skin Type VI: ~75 minutes

Sunscreen multiplies safe time: SPF 30 extends it ~30×. UV Index also matters — at UV Index 11 you burn twice as fast as at UV 6.
