Safe Exposure Time
UV Exposure and Skin Type (Fitzpatrick Scale)
The Fitzpatrick Scale classifies skin into 6 types based on burn/tan response:
| Type | Description | Burn tendency |
|---|---|---|
| I | Very fair, freckles, red/blonde hair | Always burns |
| II | Fair skin, blue/green eyes | Burns easily |
| III | Medium skin, brown hair | Burns moderately |
| IV | Olive/Mediterranean skin | Burns minimally |
| V | Brown skin | Rarely burns |
| VI | Dark brown/black skin | Very rarely burns |
Base exposure time (UV Index 6):
- Skin Type I: ~10 minutes
- Skin Type VI: ~75 minutes
Sunscreen multiplies safe time: SPF 30 extends it ~30×. UV Index also matters — at UV Index 11 you burn twice as fast as at UV 6.
