Leather Hide Area Estimator

Estimate usable square footage from any leather hide.
Enter max length and width to get raw and usable area after edge and belly trim allowance.

Hide Area Estimate

Leather hides are not rectangles. They have irregular edges, a tapered neck, a wide belly, and flanks that taper toward the legs. Measuring a hide at its maximum length and width gives you the bounding rectangle — always larger than the actual hide.

A correction factor of roughly 0.85 converts the bounding rectangle to estimated total hide area:

Total sq ft ≈ (max length × max width) / 144 × 0.85

Of that total, the usable portion is further reduced. Edges and belly are thinner, stretchier, and looser-grained than the back and shoulders. For most projects, figure 75–80% of total area is usable.

Usable sq ft ≈ total sq ft × 0.78

For precision work (watch straps, card wallets, bifolds), usable percentage drops lower because you are selecting only the tightest-grained sections — typically the back and upper shoulder area. For those projects, budget 50–60% of total area.

Commercially sold hides are measured and priced per square foot. The hide tag gives the actual area, which is more accurate than estimating from dimensions. If your hide has a tag, use that number directly and apply the usability factor for your project type.

Estimating from dimensions is most useful at a tannery or market when you want to quickly judge whether a hide covers your project before buying. Also useful when cutting down a hide and wanting to know how much remains after taking some pieces.

For any project, measure the largest single piece you need, add 15–20% for seam allowances and skiving waste, and confirm it fits on the usable section before cutting.
