Monthly Food Cost

Monthly cat food cost is calculated by combining the cost of dry food (kibble), wet food (canned or pouches), and any supplements or treats, then projecting to a monthly total based on your cat’s daily feeding amounts.

Daily feeding amount formula: Daily Calories Needed = 30 × Body Weight (kg) + 70 (simplified Resting Energy Requirement) Or the commonly used guideline: approximately 20 calories per pound of body weight for a typical adult cat.

Food cost formula: Daily Cost = (Daily Dry Food Amount × Cost per Gram) + (Daily Wet Food Amount × Cost per gram)

Monthly cost: Monthly Cost = Daily Cost × 30.5

Cost per serving from can/pouch: Cost per serving = Can price ÷ Servings per can Cost per 100 kcal = (Price per can ÷ Calories per can) × 100

What each variable means:

  • Dry food (kibble) — 3–4 oz/day for an average 10-lb cat; typically $0.50–$2.00/day depending on brand quality; calorie-dense (300–400 kcal/100g)
  • Wet food — 3–5.5 oz cans or 85g pouches, 1–2 per day; typically $0.80–$2.50/can; higher moisture content (beneficial for urinary health); fewer calories per gram (60–100 kcal/100g vs. 350+ for dry)
  • Caloric needs by life stage:
    • Kitten (under 1 year): 200–300 kcal/day (growing rapidly)
    • Adult cat (1–7 years): 150–250 kcal/day
    • Senior cat (7+ years): 130–200 kcal/day
    • Neutered cats: reduce by 10–20% to prevent weight gain

Reference: monthly food cost by brand tier (10-lb adult cat, mixed dry/wet):

  • Economy brands (Friskies, 9Lives): $20–$35/month
  • Mid-range (Purina One, IAMS): $35–$60/month
  • Premium (Royal Canin, Hills Science Diet): $60–$120/month
  • Ultra-premium (raw, freeze-dried, human-grade): $120–$250+/month

These monthly ranges are rough US figures that move with brand, region, and year. The calculator estimates how much food your cat needs by weight, then multiplies by the dry and wet prices you enter.

Worked example: 10-lb (4.5 kg) neutered adult cat. Feeding: 1/4 cup dry kibble/day ($25 per 10-lb bag, ~130 servings of 1/4 cup) + 1 wet food pouch/day ($1.20/pouch).

  • Daily dry cost = $25 ÷ 130 servings = $0.19/day
  • Daily wet cost = $1.20/day
  • Total daily cost = $0.19 + $1.20 = $1.39/day
  • Monthly cost = $1.39 × 30.5 = $42.40/month
  • Annual food cost = $42.40 × 12 = $508.80/year

Add annual veterinary costs ($150–$400), litter ($15–$30/month), and toys/accessories ($10–$20/month) for a total annual ownership cost of approximately $900–$1,500/year for a healthy adult cat.
