Self-Compassion Assessment

What Is Self-Compassion? Self-compassion means treating yourself with the same kindness, care, and understanding you would offer a good friend when you suffer, fail, or feel inadequate. Developed by Dr. Kristin Neff at the University of Texas, it is one of the most researched positive psychology constructs.

Three Core Components Self-kindness: Being warm and understanding toward yourself rather than harshly critical. Common humanity: Recognizing that suffering and personal failure are universal human experiences. Mindfulness: Observing painful thoughts and feelings without suppressing or over-identifying with them.

Why It Matters Research shows self-compassion is associated with greater emotional resilience, more stable motivation, reduced anxiety and depression, healthier relationships, and better recovery from setbacks. Importantly, self-compassion does not reduce motivation — self-compassionate people set just as high goals but are kinder to themselves when they fall short.

Self-Compassion vs Self-Esteem Self-esteem depends on external evaluation and success. Self-compassion is unconditional and stable. People with high self-compassion handle failure better because their self-worth is not contingent on achievement.
