Attention Span Estimator

Estimate your optimal focus session length from age, task type, and daily habits.
Returns work block duration, break intervals, and daily deep work capacity.

Optimal Focus Sessions

Attention Span varies based on age, task type, individual habits, and environmental factors. This calculator estimates your optimal work session length and break schedule.

Average sustained attention by age group:

  • Children (6-10): 10-20 minutes
  • Teens (11-17): 20-35 minutes
  • Young adults (18-30): 30-50 minutes
  • Adults (31-50): 25-45 minutes
  • Older adults (51+): 20-40 minutes

These are averages for sustained, focused attention on a single task. Short bursts of attention (reading a text message) are different from sustained focus (studying, coding, writing).

Task type affects focus duration:

  • Creative work (writing, design, art): shorter bursts of 25-45 minutes work best, as the brain needs frequent rest to maintain creativity
  • Analytical work (coding, math, data): longer sessions of 45-90 minutes are possible once you reach “flow state”
  • Repetitive tasks (data entry, filing): attention drops significantly after 20-30 minutes
  • Reading/studying: 25-50 minutes with 5-10 minute breaks

Popular time management methods:

  • Pomodoro Technique: 25 minutes work + 5 minute break (4 cycles, then 15-30 minute break)
  • 52-17 Rule: 52 minutes work + 17 minute break (based on productivity research by DeskTime in 2014)
  • 90-Minute Blocks: 90 minutes work + 20 minute break (based on ultradian rhythm research)

Factors that reduce attention span:

  • Sleep deprivation (even 1 hour less reduces focus by 20-30%)
  • Multitasking (switching tasks costs 15-25 minutes to regain deep focus)
  • Phone notifications (each interruption takes 23 minutes to fully recover from, according to research by Gloria Mark at UC Irvine)
  • Hunger, dehydration, and caffeine crashes

Factors that improve attention span:

  • Regular exercise (improves focus for 2-3 hours afterward)
  • Adequate sleep (7-9 hours)
  • Hydration and balanced nutrition
  • Mindfulness practice (even 10 minutes daily improves sustained attention over time)
