Work-life balance is the degree to which your time and mental energy are distributed in a way that satisfies both your professional and personal needs. Calculating a score helps identify imbalance before it causes burnout or relationship strain.
Formula:
Work Hours per Week Score = (Actual Work Hours ÷ Target Work Hours) × 100 (A score over 100% means you are overworking relative to your target)
Time Distribution Score: Balance Ratio = Personal / Family Hours ÷ Work Hours Healthy range: ≥ 1.5 (1.5 hours of personal time for every hour worked)
Work-Life Balance Index (composite): WLB Index = (Personal Time Score + Recovery Score + Boundary Score + Satisfaction Score) ÷ 4 Each dimension scored 1–10.
What each dimension means:
- Personal Time Score — hours spent on family, hobbies, fitness, social life (1=very low, 10=abundant).
- Recovery Score — quality of sleep and mental decompression after work (1=never disconnects, 10=fully recharges daily).
- Boundary Score — ability to stop work at a set time without guilt (1=always working, 10=clear separation).
- Satisfaction Score — subjective feeling that your time allocation matches your values (1=deeply unhappy with balance, 10=fully aligned).
WLB Index interpretation:
- 8–10: Excellent balance | 6–7.9: Good balance, minor adjustments suggested
- 4–5.9: Moderate imbalance — review priorities | Below 4: Significant imbalance — burnout risk
Worked example: Works 55 hours/week (target: 40). Sleep 6.5 hrs/night. Personal Time: 4 | Recovery: 3 | Boundary: 2 | Satisfaction: 3
WLB Index = (4+3+2+3) ÷ 4 = 12 ÷ 4 = 3.0 — significant imbalance Work Hours Score = 55 ÷ 40 × 100 = 137.5% (37.5% over target)
Practical interventions: Block personal time in your calendar first; set a hard stop alarm; turn off work notifications after 7 PM.
