Grade Steps Per Size

Pattern Grading Size Step

Pattern grading is the process of scaling a base pattern up and down to fit a range of body sizes. Standard grade rules differ by industry but follow predictable percentage relationships.

Standard women’s misses grade rules (per size step):

Measurement Step Size
Bust 1 inch (2.5 cm)
Waist 1 inch (2.5 cm)
Hip 1 inch (2.5 cm)
Shoulder 1/4 inch (0.6 cm)
Bicep 1/4 inch (0.6 cm)
Wrist 1/8 inch (0.3 cm)
Neck 1/4 inch (0.6 cm)
Sleeve length 1/8 inch (0.3 cm)
Front length 1/8 inch (0.3 cm)

Plus-size grading (sizes 14W and up) typically adds 1.5 inches between sizes for bust, waist, and hip — body shape changes more dramatically in plus range.

Children’s sizes:

Age Range Step (chest, waist, hip)
0-12 months 0.5 in (1.3 cm)
1-4 years 0.75 in (1.9 cm)
5-8 years 1 in (2.5 cm)
9-12 years (pre-teen) 1-1.5 in (2.5-3.8 cm)
Teen 1 in (back to misses grading)

Men’s grading:

Measurement Step Size
Chest 2 inches (5 cm) per size
Waist 2 inches (5 cm)
Sleeve length 0.5 inch (1.3 cm)
Shoulder 0.5 inch (1.3 cm)
Neck 0.5 inch (1.3 cm)

Where to apply the grade:

  • Side seams: distribute waist + hip increases evenly between front and back at side seams
  • Center front / back: typically NO grade — keeps button placket centered
  • Princess seams: distribute waist + bust grade at the curved seam (preferred for fitted)
  • Sleeves: grade at the underarm (cap) and wrist
  • Neckline: grade neck circumference equally around

Grading methods:

  1. Pattern by pattern: redraw each piece at each size — most accurate, slow
  2. Slash and spread: cut pattern, spread, redraw — moderate accuracy
  3. Computer (CAD): Lectra, Gerber, Optitex — instant, scaleable, industry standard
  4. Nesting: stack all sizes on one piece — efficient for cutting layouts

Why precision matters:

  • A 1/4 inch grade error compounds over 3-4 sizes = 1 inch off → fitted garments fail
  • Grade errors are most visible at the waist seam (gaping or tight) and shoulder slope (poor armhole fit)
  • Always grade at the same point on every pattern piece to maintain seam-line continuity

Industry vs home sewing: Commercial patterns (Big 4: McCall’s, Vogue, Simplicity, Butterick) include nested sizes pre-graded. Home sewists typically only grade between adjacent sizes for a single garment. Independent designers (e.g., Closet Core, True Bias) grade with size-inclusive ranges (XS-5XL or 0-30).
