Zipper Length vs Opening Length Zipper length is measured from the top stop to the bottom stop (not the full tape length). For most applications, the zipper should be 1-2 inches longer than the opening so the slider clears the seamline at the top.
Standard Zipper Lengths Common dress/skirt zippers: 7", 9", 14", 22". Pant fly zippers: 7", 9". Bag zippers: 7", 8", 10", 12", 14". Upholstery/cushion: 14", 18", 22", 24". You can always shorten a coil or nylon zipper — cut from the bottom, make a new bottom stop with thread bar tacks.
Zipper Types Coil (nylon): flexible, lightweight, ideal for curves. Invisible: hides in the seam, for dresses and fitted garments. Metal: heavy, decorative, used for jeans and bags. Separating: opens completely at both ends, for jackets. Plastic molded: heavy duty, outerwear.
Shortening a Zipper Never cut from the top — you will remove the slider. Cut from the bottom to the desired length, then sew a bartack 1/4" below the new bottom stop to prevent the slider from coming off.
