What Is a DIN Setting? DIN (Deutsches Institut fur Normung, the German Institute for Standardization) settings determine how easily ski bindings release during a fall. A higher DIN means the binding holds tighter and requires more force to release. The correct DIN prevents premature releases (dangerous at speed) while ensuring the binding releases in a fall before injury occurs.
How DIN Is Determined The industry chart (ISO 11088) starts by turning your body into a single letter, the skier code. Weight gives one code and height gives another, and you take the lower of the two. That is why a 90 kg skier who is 160 cm tall does not get the same setting as a 90 kg skier who is 190 cm: the shorter one has less leg to lever against the binding, so the chart holds the code down. From there, skier type moves the setting up or down by ability, boot sole length adjusts for the leverage the boot itself provides, and age pulls the number down for skiers over 50 or under 10, whose bones tolerate less.

Skier Type Categories Type I (Cautious): Prefers lower release settings to minimize injury risk. Suitable for beginners, older skiers, and those who ski slowly and on easy terrain. Type II (Moderate): Standard settings for intermediate skiers who ski at moderate speeds on various terrain. Type III (Aggressive): Higher release settings for expert skiers who ski aggressively, at high speeds, and on steep or difficult terrain. Type III skiers accept increased knee injury risk in exchange for fewer accidental releases.
Safety Warning DIN settings should ideally be set by a qualified ski technician using calibrated testing equipment. This calculator provides a starting reference only. Improperly set bindings are a leading cause of ski injuries. If bindings release unexpectedly during normal skiing, the DIN is too low. If bindings do not release during a fall, the DIN is too high and knee/leg injury risk increases dramatically.
Boot Sole Length Boot sole length (in mm) is printed on the boot, usually on the heel. It is NOT your foot size. It is the length of the boot sole from toe to heel. Common range: 270-340mm for adults. This measurement is critical for proper binding adjustment.
