Surf Leash Sizing Guide
The basic rule: your leash should be equal to or slightly longer than your board.
This ensures the board cannot swing back and hit you after a wipeout.
| Board Length | Leash Length | Conditions |
|---|---|---|
| Under 6 ft | 6 ft leash | Small beach breaks |
| 6–7 ft | 7 ft leash | Everyday surf |
| 7–8 ft | 8 ft leash | Intermediate boards |
| 8–9 ft (funboard) | 9 ft leash | Mellow waves |
| 9–10 ft (longboard) | 10 ft coil leash | Gentle, rolling waves |
Thickness:
- Small waves / light boards: 5–6mm cord
- Medium conditions: 7mm cord
- Powerful surf: 8mm+ cord
Warning: In big, powerful surf, always use a leash rated for those conditions. A snapped leash in big surf can be extremely dangerous.
