Wax Bars Needed

Surf Wax Quantity Estimation

Wax coverage depends on board area and how often you re-wax. A typical full re-wax uses about half a bar for a shortboard, one full bar for a longboard.

Coverage rate: about 1 bar per 8-12 sq ft of deck — varies by application style.

Standard board sizes and approximate deck areas:

Board Type Length Deck Area
Shortboard 5'8" - 6'4" ~6 sq ft
Funboard / hybrid 6'8" - 7'6" ~8 sq ft
Mini-malibu 7'6" - 8'6" ~10 sq ft
Longboard 9’ - 10' ~14 sq ft
SUP 10’ - 12' ~22 sq ft

Wax temperature ratings (essential):

Wax Type Water Temp Range
Tropical 75°F+ (24°C+)
Warm 65-75°F (19-24°C)
Cool 58-68°F (14-20°C)
Cold 50-60°F (10-15°C)
Cold Water Below 55°F (13°C)

Always pick wax for air or water — whichever is colder. Tropical wax in cold water turns rock-hard and provides zero grip. Cold-water wax in tropical conditions melts and runs off.

Application schedule:

  • Session-style application (basecoat + top coat): 3-5 bars/year for one board
  • Full re-wax monthly: 12 bars/year
  • Re-wax after every session (intense use): 30+ bars/year
  • Travel / multiple boards: budget 2 bars per board per trip

Layering for max grip:

  1. Basecoat (harder wax — Sex Wax base, Sticky Bumps base): 1× per board, lasts season
  2. Top coat (temperature-rated wax): refresh every 1-3 sessions
  3. Re-wax: rub in circles, then crosshatch in two opposing directions

Storage: Cold/Cool wax in a hot car turns into a wax puddle. Tropical wax in a cold car cracks. Keep wax at room temp.

Eco-conscious wax brands:

  • Matunas (paraffin-free, biodegradable)
  • Famous Surf (organic + soy-based)
  • Sticky Bumps Original (paraffin, but plastic-free packaging)
