Tattoo prices depend on three main factors: Cost = Time × Hourly Rate × Complexity × Placement Difficulty

Hourly rates by experience level (US averages):

• Apprentice: $50-100 per hour
• Junior artist: $100-150 per hour
• Experienced artist: $150-250 per hour
• Senior / well-known artist: $250-400 per hour
• Celebrity or award-winning artist: $400-800+ per hour

Time estimates by tattoo size and detail:

• Tiny (under 2 inches): 30-60 minutes
• Small (2-4 inches): 1-2 hours
• Medium (4-6 inches): 2-4 hours
• Large (6-10 inches): 4-8 hours
• Extra-large (10+ inches): 8-15 hours
• Sleeves / back pieces: 20-50+ hours across multiple sessions

Complexity multipliers:

• Simple line work / lettering: 1.0×
• Traditional / neo-traditional: 1.2×
• Black-and-grey realism: 1.4×
• Color realism / portrait: 1.6×
• Hyper-realism / micro-realism: 1.8×

Placement difficulty multipliers:

• Easy (forearm, calf, thigh, upper arm, chest, back): 1.0×
• Difficult (ribs, sternum, neck): 1.2×
• Very difficult (hands, fingers, feet, face, behind the ear): 1.4×

Hands and fingers belong in the top band rather than the middle one. The skin moves constantly over bone and tendon, the artist is working at awkward angles, and those areas reject ink often enough that a second pass is normal rather than a mistake. Anyone quoting you a forearm rate for a finger tattoo has not done many.

The shop minimum is the number that catches people out

Nearly every shop has a floor, typically somewhere around $80 to $150, and it applies no matter how small the design. It covers a fresh needle, a fresh tube, ink caps, gloves, the setup, the breakdown and the sterilisation, and none of that gets cheaper because you asked for a two-centimetre star.

This is why “tiny tattoos are cheap” is only half true. Rate times hours on a 45-minute piece often lands under the minimum, and the minimum wins. Enter your shop’s floor in the calculator and it will apply it rather than quoting you a number the shop will not honour. Call ahead and ask, since the figure varies more between shops in the same city than it does between cities.

Tipping: the standard is 15-25% of the total, cash, direct to the artist. On a large multi-session piece most people tip per session rather than saving it all for the last one.
