Figuring out how big a storage box needs to be comes down to total toy volume, packing efficiency, and a practical margin for easy retrieval.
The formula:
box_volume = (toy_volume x count) / packing_efficiency
Packing efficiency:
- Uniform rigid toys (blocks, stackable cups): 65-70% — they pack tightly
- Mixed irregular toys (action figures, vehicles): 55-60% — gaps everywhere
- Soft toys (stuffed animals, cloth dolls): 45-50% — compressible but bulky
The remaining volume is dead air between toys, and that is where your hand fits to grab a toy.
Toy volume approximation:
For a box shape, L x W x H. For irregular shapes (dolls, vehicles), use bounding box x 0.65 for the actual solid fraction.
Practical box sizing:
Once you have the required volume, pick a commercially available box at least 10% larger for easy access. Standard storage bins: 10 L, 15 L, 20 L, 30 L, 45 L, 60 L. Shallow bins (height-to-footprint ratio under 0.5) are better for young children — they can see what is inside and reach the bottom without tipping the bin.
Label everything. A storage system that is not labeled is a storage system that does not get used.
