Road Trip Time Planner
A road trip is never just distance divided by speed. Real travel time includes mandatory rest stops, meal breaks, fuel stops, and the inevitable slowdowns through towns and construction zones. This calculator builds a realistic timeline so you can plan arrival times accurately.
The Formula
Total Trip Time = Driving Time + Rest Stops + Meal Breaks + Fuel Stops
Where:
- Driving Time = Total Distance / Average Speed
- Rest Stops = floor(Driving Time / Rest Interval) × Rest Duration
- Meal Breaks = floor(Total Trip Time / Meal Interval) × Meal Duration
- Fuel Stops = floor(Distance / Fuel Range) × Refueling Time
Rest Stop Guidelines
Most road safety organizations recommend stopping every 2 hours or 100–120 miles (160–190 km). Studies by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety show that drowsy driving causes over 100,000 crashes per year in the United States. A 15–20 minute break every 2 hours dramatically reduces fatigue-related accidents.
| Break Type | Typical Duration | Interval |
|---|---|---|
| Quick rest stop | 10–15 min | Every 2 hours |
| Bathroom/stretch | 5–10 min | Every 1.5–2 hours |
| Meal break (fast food) | 20–30 min | Every 4–5 hours |
| Meal break (sit down) | 45–60 min | Every 4–5 hours |
| Fuel stop | 5–10 min | Based on tank range |
Average Speeds by Road Type
| Road Type | Average Speed |
|---|---|
| Interstate/motorway | 65–75 mph (105–120 km/h) |
| US highway (rural) | 55–65 mph (90–105 km/h) |
| State highway | 45–55 mph (72–90 km/h) |
| Mixed roads | 50–60 mph (80–97 km/h) |
| Mountain roads | 35–45 mph (56–72 km/h) |
Fuel Range Estimation
Fuel Range = Tank Size (gallons) × Fuel Economy (MPG)
| Vehicle Type | Typical MPG | Typical Tank | Range |
|---|---|---|---|
| Compact car | 30–35 mpg | 12 gal | 360–420 mi |
| Sedan | 25–30 mpg | 14 gal | 350–420 mi |
| SUV | 20–25 mpg | 18 gal | 360–450 mi |
| Pickup truck | 15–20 mpg | 26 gal | 390–520 mi |
| Minivan | 20–25 mpg | 20 gal | 400–500 mi |
| Hybrid | 40–55 mpg | 11 gal | 440–605 mi |
Worked Example
A 600-mile trip at 65 mph average, tank range 350 miles:
- Driving time = 600 / 65 = 9.23 hours
- Rest stops every 2 hours = 4 stops × 15 min = 60 min
- Meal breaks = 2 meals × 30 min = 60 min
- Fuel stops = 1 stop × 10 min = 10 min
- Total: 9h 14min + 1h 10min + 10min = approximately 11.5 hours
This is far more realistic than the 9 hours 14 minutes that a GPS would show.
