The figure most people overlook is the gap between the mid-market rate (the one quoted on Google or a finance site) and the rate they actually receive. You almost never get the mid-market rate. Banks, card networks, and exchange kiosks add a margin called the spread on top of any flat fee, and that spread is where the real cost usually hides. Airport counters and “no fee” booths are often the most expensive of all, because they bury a wide spread instead of charging an obvious fee. When you compare options, compare the rate you would actually get against the mid-market rate, not just the advertised fees.
