Choosing the Right Embroidery Hoop The hoop must be large enough to hold your design plus a margin around all sides. The margin keeps the hoop away from the stitching so you don’t crush your work and gives you room to maneuver the needle near the edges.
The Formula Minimum hoop diameter = Max(design width, design height) + (2 × margin) Then round up to the next available standard hoop size.
Standard Hoop Sizes 4", 5", 6", 7", 8", 9", 10", 12", 14", 16" Specialty hoops are also available up to 24" for large projects.
Recommended Margins
- Small detailed work: 1" margin around the design
- Standard embroidery: 1.5–2" margin (recommended)
- Large or complex designs: 2–3" margin
When to Use a Frame Instead of a Hoop If your design is significantly wider than it is tall (or vice versa), a rectangular embroidery frame or stretcher bars will hold the fabric taut more evenly and avoid the hoop distorting your stitches.
Fabric Piece Size The fabric you cut must be larger than the hoop — you need extra fabric to grip in the hoop. Add at least 3 inches beyond the hoop diameter on each side when cutting your fabric.
