Work out how many round beads a bracelet, necklace, or anklet needs.
Subtracts the clasp, rounds down so it never runs long, and adds a buying buffer.
Bead count depends on the finished length of your project and the diameter of each bead. The formula is straightforward:
Number of Beads = (Finished Length in mm − Clasp Length in mm) ÷ Bead Diameter in mm
rounded down, so the piece never finishes longer than you asked for.
Where:
- Finished Length is the whole piece as worn, clasp included. Enter it in inches or centimetres and the calculator converts to millimetres for you.
- Clasp Length is however much of that finished length the clasp and crimps occupy rather than beads.
- Bead Diameter is measured across the widest point of the bead, which for a round bead is also its hole-to-hole spacing on the wire.

The clasp is not free length
A lobster clasp with its jump ring and crimp covers eats 10 to 15 mm of the finished piece, and a toggle or a box clasp can take 20 to 25. That length is part of the necklace you are wearing but none of it is bead, so it comes off the target before you divide. Enter it in the clasp field above and the calculator does the subtraction; leave it at zero for a stretch bracelet, which has no clasp at all.
Practical example: An 18-inch necklace with 8 mm beads and a 12 mm lobster clasp:
18 inches = 457.2 mm 457.2 − 12 = 445.2 mm of beads 445.2 ÷ 8 = 55.65, so 55 beads With a 15% buffer: 55 + 9 = 64 beads to buy
Note the rounding down. Fifty-six beads plus the clasp comes to 460 mm, or 18.11 inches, which is past your target. On a necklace nobody would notice. On a bracelet sized to a wrist, an extra 8 mm is the difference between fitting and not.
Why buy extra? Ten to fifteen percent more than the exact count is the standard allowance. Beads arrive with chips, off-centre holes and the occasional one whose hole never got drilled through, and you will want a few spare to play with as the design comes together. Order the buffer in the same order as the main quantity: bead colours drift between production runs, and a replacement strand bought later rarely matches.
Tips:
- Mixing bead sizes? Work out each size separately, based on the length it will occupy, then add the results
- For stretch bracelets, measure the wrist and add half an inch (1.3 cm) for comfort
- Seed beads are sized by a different system entirely (11/0 is about 1.8 mm, 8/0 about 2.5, 6/0 about 3.3), so they are not on the dropdown above
