Organic traffic value estimates what your SEO-generated traffic would cost if you had to purchase it via Google Ads — a key metric for demonstrating the ROI of content marketing and SEO investment.
The Core Formula:
Organic Traffic Value = Monthly Organic Visits × Average CPC × CTR Equivalence Factor
A simpler version used by tools like Ahrefs and Semrush:
Traffic Value = Σ (Keyword Monthly Clicks × Keyword CPC)
For each ranking keyword: Keyword Value = Monthly Clicks × CPC
Worked Example:
| Keyword | Monthly Clicks | CPC | Value |
|---|---|---|---|
| “best crm software” | 420 | $8.50 | $3,570 |
| “crm for small business” | 215 | $6.20 | $1,333 |
| “free crm tools” | 380 | $4.10 | $1,558 |
| “crm comparison” | 95 | $9.80 | $931 |
- Total Monthly Organic Traffic Value = $7,392
- Annual Organic Traffic Value = $88,704
If your SEO content program costs $3,000/month, your ROI = ($7,392 − $3,000) / $3,000 = 146.4% monthly.
Industry CPC Benchmarks:
- Legal: $6–$20 CPC
- Finance/Insurance: $8–$40 CPC
- B2B SaaS: $5–$15 CPC
- eCommerce: $0.80–$3.00 CPC
- Health/Medical: $3–$12 CPC
Caveat: Organic clicks convert differently than paid clicks. Organic typically converts at 2–5× the rate of PPC for informational content, but PPC can outperform for transactional, high-intent queries. Use traffic value as a directional benchmark, not an exact dollar figure.
