Air Filter Replacement Schedule Calculator
Find your HVAC air filter replacement interval from filter type (MERV 1-16), pets, allergies, and home size.
Fiberglass = 30 days, MERV-13 = 60-90.
HVAC air filters trap dust, pollen, pet dander, mold spores, and other airborne particles to maintain indoor air quality and protect your heating/cooling system. Replacing filters on schedule improves air quality, reduces energy costs, and extends equipment life.
Replacement schedule formula: Next Replacement Date = Last Replacement Date + Replacement Interval (days) Annual Filter Cost = 365 ÷ Replacement Interval × Filter Cost Energy Waste from Dirty Filter = Baseline Energy Cost × Restriction Penalty %
Replacement interval by filter type and household:
| Filter Type | MERV | Basic Use | Pets | Pets + Allergies |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fiberglass (1 inch) | 1–4 | 30 days | 20 days | 15 days |
| Pleated (1 inch) | 8–11 | 90 days | 60 days | 30–45 days |
| Pleated (4–5 inch) | 11–13 | 6–9 months | 6 months | 4–6 months |
| HEPA (whole-house) | 17+ | 12–18 months | 12 months | 6–12 months |
What each variable means:
- MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) — rates filter effectiveness from 1 (lowest) to 20 (highest). Higher MERV captures smaller particles but restricts airflow more.
- Restriction Penalty — a heavily clogged filter can increase HVAC energy consumption by 10–30% by forcing the blower motor to work harder against resistance.
- IAQ (Indoor Air Quality) — EPA estimates indoor air is 2–5× more polluted than outdoor air due to trapped contaminants.
MERV rating reference:
- MERV 1–4 — captures large dust and pollen. Minimum protection.
- MERV 8–10 — captures mold spores, pet dander, dust mites. Good standard.
- MERV 11–13 — captures fine dust, smoke particles, bacteria. Best for allergy sufferers.
- MERV 13–16 — hospital-grade. May restrict residential airflow.
Worked example: Household: 2 cats, mild allergies. 1-inch pleated MERV 11 filter at $8 each, 45-day replacement cycle. Annual filter cost = (365 ÷ 45) × $8 = 8.1 × $8 = $65/year Comparable annual savings vs. never replacing (30% energy penalty): Average HVAC bill $150/month × 12 × 30% = $540/year in wasted energy — far exceeding filter cost.
Smart reminder tip: Write the installation date directly on the filter with a marker. Set a recurring phone reminder the day you install a new filter.
