Supplies Needed

Coat check services are offered at restaurants, theaters, concert venues, hotels, and clubs. Understanding the expected tip and total cost prevents awkward moments at the end of an evening and ensures service staff are fairly compensated.

Total cost formula: Total = (Fee per Item × Number of Items) + Tip

Standard tip calculation: Tip per Item = $1.00 to $2.00 per item (U.S. customary tipping norm) Tip % alternative = 15–20% of total coat check fee (when fee is unusually high)

Fee structures:

Venue Type Typical Fee (per item)
Casual restaurant $0 (free) or $1–2
Fine dining $2–5
Theater / opera $2–4
Nightclub $2–5
Hotel / coat room $1–3
Concert venue $2–5

Worked example: A couple attends a Broadway show and checks 2 coats + 1 bag at $3 each. Recommended tip: $2 per item. Fee = 3 items × $3 = $9.00 Tip = 3 items × $2 = $6.00 Total = $15.00

When to tip more:

  • Coat check staff retrieved items quickly at end of a crowded show
  • Items were particularly bulky, heavy, or fragile
  • Valet-style service included (brought car, hailed cab, etc.)

When coat check is free: Many casual restaurants offer complimentary coat check. Tipping $1–2 per item is still expected and appreciated — staff earn most of their income from tips, not wages.

Cash vs. card: Most coat check operations are cash-only. It is wise to carry small bills ($1s and $5s) to a venue where coat check is available. Some newer venues accept card or QR-based tipping.
