Holiday Gift Budget Per Person Calculator
Plan your total holiday gift budget and divide it among recipients based on relationship closeness and priority.
The Holiday Spending Problem Americans spend an average of $900-$1,000 on holiday gifts each year. Without a plan, spending tends to creep well above budget. This calculator helps you allocate a fixed budget fairly across different groups of people.
Weighted Allocation Method Not everyone on your list deserves the same budget. This calculator uses priority weights to allocate proportionally:
- Close family (spouse, children, parents): weight 4
- Extended family (siblings, grandparents, in-laws): weight 2
- Close friends: weight 2
- Acquaintances and coworkers: weight 1
The Formula Total Weight = (Close Family × 4) + (Extended Family × 2) + (Close Friends × 2) + (Acquaintances × 1) Budget per Weight Unit = Total Budget / Total Weight Per-Person Budget = Budget per Weight Unit × Group Weight
Example Budget: $600 Close family: 3 people × weight 4 = 12 units Extended family: 4 people × weight 2 = 8 units Friends: 5 people × weight 2 = 10 units Acquaintances: 8 people × weight 1 = 8 units Total: 38 weight units Unit value: $600 / 38 = $15.79 per unit Close family each: $15.79 × 4 = $63.16 Acquaintance each: $15.79 × 1 = $15.79
Gift Budget Tips
- Set your total budget BEFORE shopping — not after adding up purchases
- Consider non-monetary gifts (experiences, homemade items, your time)
- Buy off-season when possible for better prices
- Gift cards: easy but impersonal — save for acquaintances and coworkers
- Secret Santa/gift exchanges reduce per-person cost significantly
- Kids appreciate experiences (outings, memberships) as much as toys
