Daily beats = resting heart rate (bpm) × 60 min × 24 hours
A typical resting heart rate of 70 bpm gives about 100,800 beats per day. Multiply by 365 days and 79 years, roughly the global life expectancy, and you get about 2.9 billion heartbeats. That is the kind of number that does not fit in human intuition.
The resting rate is more variable than you think
The “normal” range from medical references is 60 to 100 bpm, but the population is concentrated near 70. Endurance athletes sit at 40 to 55 (Tour de France riders have been recorded at 28 to 32 resting). Children run faster than adults: a newborn is around 130, dropping to 90 by age six and to adult levels by adolescence. Caffeine, anxiety, fever, dehydration, and even posture (lying vs standing) move the number by 10 to 20 bpm.
Slow heart rates correlate with longer lives, but the causation runs the wrong way
It is tempting to read the heartbeat count as a fixed lifetime allowance, like a battery you drain. The animal world looks like it agrees: a mouse beats around 600 bpm and lives 2 years, an elephant around 30 bpm and lives 60 or more, and both come to roughly a billion heartbeats. Within humans the pattern does not hold cleanly. A slow resting rate is mostly a consequence of fitness rather than a cause of longevity. The heart that beats slowly belongs to a person with strong cardiovascular conditioning and lower stress.
What actually adds beats
Exercise adds them in the short term and saves them in the long term. A 45-minute session at 140 bpm is 6,300 beats, but you would have spent 3,150 of those sitting still at 70, so the session itself costs about 3,150 extra.
Set against that: dropping your resting rate from 75 to 65 over months of training saves 14,400 beats every single day, for the rest of your life. One day of that repays four workouts. The arithmetic is not close.

Run the top and bottom rows out to 79 years and the 40 bpm gap between an athlete and someone sitting at 90 comes to 1.7 billion beats: 2.1 billion against 3.7 billion. Worth doing the multiplication yourself rather than eyeballing it, which is how this page previously ended up quoting a figure four times too small.
