Just for Fun! This calculator is purely for entertainment and does not reflect scientific research on relationships. Compatibility calculators have been popular entertainment since at least the 1970s in Japan (“FLAMES” game) and in teen magazines worldwide. They generate a score based on names, dates, or personality answers, often using simple mathematical tricks.

The FLAMES Algorithm (Classic) FLAMES = Friends, Love, Affection, Marriage, Enemies, Siblings. Cross out every letter the two names share, one for one, and count what is left. Then count that many letters round the ring, strike the one you land on, and keep counting from the next survivor until a single letter remains. That survivor is the answer. The step people get wrong is that the first letter you land on is eliminated, not chosen. Emma and James leave three letters, and the elimination runs A, S, M, L, E before stopping on F for Friends, which is not the same as simply taking the third letter. This playground game spread across Asia, Europe, and the Americas through teen culture.

Numerology in Love Compatibility Life path number = sum of all digits in birth date, reduced to a single digit. The exception is 11, 22 and 33, the master numbers, which traditional numerology leaves alone. This page keeps them so it agrees with the Life Path Number calculator linked below, then reduces them for the pairing table, which only covers 1 through 9. Some people use life path numbers to assess compatibility: 1 (independent) with 9 (idealistic), etc. Numerology dates back to Pythagoras (~500 BC in Ancient Greece) who believed numbers had spiritual significance. Modern numerology is entertainment. It has no scientific basis, but many find it fun.

Zodiac Compatibility Western astrology groups signs into four elements: Fire (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius): passionate, energetic. Earth (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn): practical, grounded. Air (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius): intellectual, communicative. Water (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces): emotional, intuitive. Traditional astrology says same-element signs are compatible; opposites can complement. Sun signs run from about the 19th to the 23rd of one month to the same point in the next, so a birthday near a cusp can land either side depending on the year and the time of day. The zodiac line on the result is shown for interest only and contributes nothing to the score.

What Actually Predicts Compatibility? Research from the Gottman Institute (United States) identifies: communication, mutual respect, and friendship as the strongest predictors of relationship success. Personality research (Big Five model) finds: similarity in agreeableness and emotional stability matters more than shared hobbies. So while this calculator is just for fun, real compatibility comes from kindness, trust, and laughter.
