When to Arrive at the Airport (TSA Wait Calculator)
Find out when to leave for the airport based on your flight type, TSA screening, and crowds.
Covers PreCheck, Clear, and standard security lanes.
TSA security wait time estimation helps travelers determine when to arrive at the airport to avoid missing their flight due to security line delays. Wait time depends on the airport, terminal, time of day, day of week, season, and whether you have TSA PreCheck or CLEAR.
Recommended arrival time formula: Arrive at Airport = Flight Departure − Gate Boarding Time − Security Buffer − Walking/Transit Buffer
Security Buffer = Base Wait Time × Peak Multiplier × Day Multiplier
Where:
- Gate Boarding Time — typically 30 minutes before departure for domestic; 45 minutes for international
- Base Wait Time — average TSA wait at that airport/terminal during standard hours (typically 15–30 minutes)
- Peak Multiplier — multiplier for rush hours (6–9 AM: 2.0×; 4–7 PM: 1.7×; midday: 1.0×)
- Day Multiplier — Monday/Friday: 1.5×; weekend: 1.3×; Tuesday/Wednesday: 1.0×
- Walking/Transit Buffer — time to reach gate from security exit (5–20 minutes depending on airport size)
TSA checkpoint type wait time benchmarks:
- TSA PreCheck lane: 5–10 minutes (no shoes off, no laptop out, no liquids bag)
- Standard lane (non-PreCheck): 15–45 minutes depending on volume
- CLEAR + PreCheck: 2–5 minutes (biometric ID verification bypasses ID check line)
Airport category baselines (average wait, non-peak):
- Major hub (JFK, LAX, ORD, ATL): 20–40 minutes standard lane
- Medium hub (MDW, BNA, PDX): 12–25 minutes
- Small regional airport: 5–15 minutes
Worked example: Flying from Atlanta (ATL) on a Monday at 7:00 AM. Standard security lane. Gate is 15 minutes from security.
- Base wait: 30 minutes
- Peak multiplier (6–9 AM): 2.0×
- Day multiplier (Monday): 1.5×
- Security buffer: 30 × 2.0 × 1.5 = 90 minutes
- Gate boarding: 30 minutes
- Walking: 15 minutes
Arrive by: 7:00 AM − 30 min − 90 min − 15 min = 4:45 AM. For TSA PreCheck holders, security buffer drops to 20 minutes → arrive by 5:55 AM.
