Wedding Favor Cost

Wedding favors are small gifts given to each guest as a token of appreciation. Calculating the total favor cost per guest and in aggregate helps couples allocate their wedding budget wisely.

Formulas: Favor Cost per Guest = Item Cost + Packaging Cost + Personalization Cost Total Favor Budget = Favor Cost per Guest × Number of Guests Favor Budget as % of Total Wedding = Favor Budget ÷ Total Wedding Budget × 100

What each variable means:

  • Item Cost — the actual favor (candle, honey jar, seed packet, custom cookie, etc.).
  • Packaging Cost — boxes, bags, ribbons, tissue paper, thank-you tags.
  • Personalization Cost — custom printing, engraving, or monogramming (often priced per unit with a setup fee).
  • Setup Fee — one-time charge for custom designs (divide by guest count to get per-unit cost).

Budget benchmarks:

  • Minimal favor: $1–$3 per guest (seed packets, homemade jam, small candles)
  • Moderate favor: $4–$8 per guest (custom cookies, mini succulents, keepsakes)
  • Premium favor: $10–$20 per guest (mini perfume, personalized items, experience vouchers)
  • Luxury favor: $20–$50+ per guest (luxury chocolates, wine, crystal keepsakes)

Typical favor budget as % of total wedding: 2–4% is standard; over 5% is considered generous.

Worked example: 150 guests. Honey jars at $3.50 each + custom label printing $0.80 each + ribbon/tag $0.40 each + setup fee $50 (÷ 150 = $0.33 per guest).

Cost per guest = $3.50 + $0.80 + $0.40 + $0.33 = $5.03 per guest Total Favor Budget = $5.03 × 150 = $754.50

If total wedding budget is $20,000: Favor % = $754.50 ÷ $20,000 × 100 = 3.77% — right in the normal range.
